"You're in my house" Obama shuts down a heckler during speech

President Barack Obama showed a heckler who’s boss during his speech at an LGBT Pride month event yesterday (Wednesday, June 24). The president took to the podium in the East Room of the White House, where the heckler interrupted Obama shortly after he began to speak. The heckler, Jennicet Gutiérrez, said she was shouting for the president to release LGBTQ immigrants from detention and stop deportations, reported EBU news agency. President Obama joked that he is usually OK with hecklers, but not in his house and not by a person eating and drinking the White House hors d’oeuvres and alcohol. What are the top stories today? The Netherlands has a new King

01:46
http://www.euronews.com/ The new Dutch King Willem-Alexander has been sworn in at a ceremony in Amsterdam's Nieuwe Kerk. Willem Alexander becomes the first king of the Netherlands in more than 120 years, ascending a throne largely stripped of political power but still invested with huge symbolic significance. With his wife Queen Maxima by his side, the King took the oath of allegiance. Outside the church, a massive crowd had gathered to follow the ceremony on giant screens. Like her mother and grandmother before her, Beatrix, who is 75, chose to abdicate after a 33-year reign, saying her son was ready and that it was time for the throne to be held by "a new generation". Beatrix is a very popular Queen with an estimated 8 out of 10 Dutch people in favour of maintaining the monarchy. The abdication takes place on Queen's Day, a national holiday in The Netherlands, giving the Dutch an opportunity to gather and celebrate in what are rather morose economic times with the country back in recession. After her abdication, Queen Beatrix, the new King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, appeared on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam to an enthusiastic orange-clad crowd of well-wishers. Nearly a million people are estimated to have converged on Amsterdam for the event, including more than 10,000 police officers deployed in a massive security operation. The new King and Queen were joined by their three daughters, the eldest of whom, nine-year-old Catharina-Amalia, becomes Princess of Orange and heir to the throne. *Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown read our dossier on Europe's monarchies* Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Dutch royals age 'wisely'

03:21
http://www.euronews.com/ Wisdom sometimes lies in knowing when to let someone else take over. The Netherlands' House of Orange has applied it time and again. Queen Beatrix, having said that only by wanting to serve could modern royalty make sense, bows out for her son, just as her mother made way for her, and her grandmother handed over to her mother. Beatrix is getting out when she is 75. Willem-Alexander has just turned 46. Since 1983, the rule in the Netherlands is one of absolute primogeniture, inheritance by the eldest offspring, male or female. This relatively modern, less traditionally rigid approach to passing the crown along - less misogynist - is matched in flexibility by the business of thinking of abdication as natural as well. That thinking is still the exception in Western Europe, which has seven kingdoms, one grand duchy and two principalities - all of them hereditary constitutional monarchies. Queen Elizabeth II, who's had her throne since 1952, is 87, and has never given an inkling that she would let her son Charles have it while she is still alive. He's now 64. But the British monarchy is in the process of adopting the absolute primogeniture rule, which will put William and Kate's coming child on the waiting list, whether a boy or a girl. Spain's King Juan Carlos I isn't in a hurry to abdicate, in spite of his failing health - four surgical operations in the space of a year - or the wish of more than half his subjects to see him step down. Juan Carlos de Bourbon is 75 and has reigned since 1975. Son Felipe, 45, is king-in-waiting, even though he has a sister who's older: Elena. Spain, hover, is planning to move on from the male-preference system because it conflicts with the constitutionally established principle of gender equality. Abdication isn't taboo in the Kingdom of Belgium, but it's up to the sovereign, Albert II, to decide - crowned 19 years - but 46 percent of the Belgians say they think it would be a good idea because of his health. Albert is about to turn 79 in June, and his son Philippe is 53. Absolute primogeniture has been on the books in Belgium since 1991. Same further north. Sweden has had it since 1980. The Swedish royals don't rule out abdication in principle but they aren't chafing at the bit. King Carl XVI Gustaf, 67, will be succeeded by his daughter Victoria, 35. In 1990, Norway adopted absolute primogeniture, but it wasn't made retroactive. So, today's King Harald V, 76, will be followed by son Haakon, 39. He is the heir apparent even though he has an older sister: Märtha Louise. Denmark went for absolute primogeniture in 2009. Queen Margrethe II, 73, has been on the throne since 1972, and doesn't plan to abdicate. Fredrik, 44, if he does like his mother and most other monarchs, when he gets on will stay for life. *Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown read our dossier on Europe's monarchies* Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

It is the realisation of a project dreamt up by Ottoman sultans more than a century ago. The tunnel is the world's first connecting two continents and was inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. The engineering feat spans 13 kilometres and will carry subway commuters in Istanbul, which is Europe's biggest city with a population of 15 million people. An estimated two million cross the Bosphorus Strait daily. Work began in 2004 on what is one of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pet projects designed to change the face of Turkey.Archaeological excavations delayed completion. Eventually the tunnel will serve high-speed and freight trains. The idea for a rail tunnel below the Bosphorus dates back to 1860 while it is believed at one time one Sultan had French engineers draw up plans for a submerged tunnel which was never built and the peninsula remained intact. Now the Marmaray tunnel, an immersed tube set in the seabed has joined the two continents. One point four kilometres of its full length is fully immersed some 60 metres below the surface. It can carry around 1.5 million passengers per day. The total cost topped three point three billion euros and the government hopes it will develop into an important trading route. Marmaray is set on a silty seabed and is 20 kilometres from the active North Anatolian Fault raising fears it could be at risk from a large earthquake. But its free floating structure has been designed to withstand a quake with a magnitude of 9. Its interlocking construction means each section can be sealed off. The Yenikapi station on the European side of Istanbul will showcase relics which were uncovered during the tunnel's construction. Many date back as far a 8,500 years. The excavation site included a Byzantine port and 13 shipwrecks. Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

You are paddleboarding next to 15 great white sharks! - CA police warn beachgoers

California paddleboarders found themselves in what resembled an outtake from 'Jaws' when the chilling announcement was made that they were just metres from a school of around 15 great white sharks. In helicopter footage taken by Orange County Sheriff's Department, the creatures' forms, which the aircraft's occupants observe are 10 feet (3 meters) long, could be seen through the clear water just off the California coastline. A loudspeaker announcement could be heard coming from the helicopter saying that the area is "heavily populated at the moment with large great white sharks" and that the creatures have come "as close as the surf line". The paddleboarders are then advised to "exit the water in a calm manner".

Santiago Calatrava: finding architecture's soul

07:36
The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has been speaking to euronews. His designs - which take their inspiration from nature - provoke strong reactions; they are either loved or loathed. Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?

Residence rights for non-EU family members - utalk

02:19
http://www.euronews.com/ "I am an Italian citizen who has been offered a permanent job in Germany. Is my American husband entitled to live and work in Germany?" asks Federica from Rome. "If you are working in one of the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, as an employee, self-employed or on a posting, your non-EU spouse can stay there with you without having to meet any other conditions. As a Italian citizen working in Germany, this also applies to your American spouse. Your husband must register with the authorities and apply for a residence document in the new country, (often the town hall or local police station), within 3 months of arriving. To do so he will need: - a valid passport - your registration certificate as an EU national or any other proof of your residence in that country - proof of your family relationship, such as a marriage certificate On the residence card it should be clearly stated that it is a residence card of an EU national family member. If all is in order, the authorities should deliver the residence card within 6 months. During their stay in your new country, your family members should be treated as nationals, notably as regards access to employment, pay and benefits facilitating access to work, enrolment in schools, etc. After living legally in another EU country continuously for 5 years, your non-EU spouse automatically acquires the right of permanent residence there without having to meet any further conditions - they can stay as long as they want even if they don't work and need income support. Bear in mind that other conditions may apply in the case of registered or de-facto partnerships, as well as if you are not working," says Europe Direct Communication Officer Cristina Brandini. If you want to ask a question, go to the euronews website or on our social media pages. French citizen Christine Paris decided to move to Portugal, seduced by an income tax exemption the country is now offering foreign pensioners. Pensioners like her, who haven't been residents in Portugal in the past five years, can move to the country and enjoy their pensions tax free for 10 years. The ==tax regime== for so-called non-regular residents was created in 2009, but its impact is only being seen now, with a wave of foreigners taking up the offer. "I found it a really interesting s... Former Khmer Rouge soldier faces up to past

06:18
http://www.euronews.com/ Welcome to Kampong Thom, cradle of Pol Pot, the infamous Khmer Rouge leader.   We are here to meet Chin Meth, on her journey through history.   Enrolled by the Khmer Rouge at the age of 17, she has decided to be a witness against a former Khmer Rouge leader on trial.    "When I come back to my native village, I feel sad because I've lost all I had here," she says.   Just like her village, Chin Meth still bears the marks of that painful era. "My mother was dead. I was brought up by my aunt, and then I was called to be a Khmer Rouge soldier. When I came home, all my relatives were dead. My uncle, my great-aunt, and the 20 friends who had been enrolled with me," she says.   Chin Meth's life changed drastically in 1974, when she was recruited by the Khmer Rouge along with all the other young people in her village.   She didn't yet know she was about to serve a regime of terror which would lead to the death of some two million Cambodians - around one fifth of the country's population.   Chin Meth and her fellow female recruits were "re-educated" by the party to serve the revolution.   "They trained us to be tough, not to think about our relatives, or our parents," she says. "We had to sacrifice everything, including our personal belongings."   Chin Meth was then taught how to use weapons. On the battlefield, her female unit was in charge of carrying ammunition, and evacuating the wounded.   When the Khmer Rouge moved on Phnom Penh in 1975, the women were in charge of cleaning up the houses of those chased from their homes. "When I was cleaning up the people's belongings, I saw dead bodies in the houses," she says.   "The Khmer Rouge soldiers evacuated the town over three days. Everyone had to leave. There were people who didn't want to leave their belongings behind, and old people who didn't want to or couldn't leave their homes. They were killed on the spot."   She was then sent to work in the fields by the Khmer regime. Conditions were extremely harsh. "At first, when we worked in the rice fields, we were well fed. But then we were given only a bit of rice, mixed with tree roots, maize or swamp cabbage. My group started to rebel."   As a result, she was sent to Phnom Penh's infamous Tuol Sleng prison, otherwise known as S21. More than 12,000 people died in this former school that Pol Pot's regime turned into a prison camp.   "This picture was taken when I was arrested, I was 19," she says, pointing out her mugshot among hundreds of others on the wall.   "This is my friend from the same village as me, and this is another friend. This one was the group leader. They're all dead."   "I was held captive here, there were three of us in here, for nearly a month," she says, pointing out a tiny cell.   "I could hear the sound of blows and screams coming from upstairs. That's where I was interrogated and tortured. I still have the scars."   She survived the death camp and was sent to work in another camp, called S24, which is now a prison. She spent two years there, along with women and children, half of whom did not survive the working conditions.   "It was hell, worse than death. I worked the fields, I was tortured, I built dams, I dug dykes. We pulled the cart instead of the oxen to plough the fields. My feet were full of sores, my face was covered with skin disease. We were so thin that when we crouched, our knees reached up over our heads," she says.   When the Vietnamese invaded and took over Phnom Penh in 1979, the Khmer Rouge forced her to flee to the mountains with them. She was captured by the Vietnamese a year later, and then released.   After years of silence, Chin Meth decided to face up to the past by bearing witness at the trials of former Khmer Rouge leaders.   The first opened in 2009. She was the first female survivor to testify against Duch, former head of the S21 and S24 camps.   "It takes time to forget past sorrows," she says. "I can't forget. Even though the court has condemned former Khmer Rouge leaders, until this day, I haven't forgotten anything."   For a while, Chin Meth lived in fear of reprisals from relatives of those who were put on trial.   It is the price to pay, she says, to be rehabilitated as a member of the Cambodian community, and help build a better future for her country.   Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Germany's economy is booming. The unemployment rate is low. But at the job centres, people keep queuing up. Many have a job, but they are known as the "working poor":https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_poor. They have qualifications, but their badly payed - often part-time - jobs or temp-work don't cover basic needs. Social benefits help top up their income. Among pensioners, too, poverty is growing. Eco-businesses employ a total of 3.4 million people across Europe. This week, Business Planet takes a trip to Croatia for a closer look at a very specific kind of innovation: noise barriers. The noise barriers being built along the motorway near Zagreb are spearheading innovation. They are made up of 40 percent of recycled tyres and are among the most efficient on the market. They are the result of a project launched in 2009 as part of the European Eco-Innovation programme. One of the companies involved in their production is an SME which recycles tyres, turning them into a powder used to build the barriers. It's a great opportunity for innovation, says the company's chairman: "If we achieve the goals that were set, we're hoping to hire up to 30 people and double our production capacity," says Damir Kirić, the chairman of Gumiimpex. The powder is mixed with cement at another factory, where the noise barriers are moulded. Here, too, it's hoped the project will help hire an extra 60 people. "It's opened up new doors. We're hoping to increase turnover by 25 percent in Croatia, but also in neighbouring countries," says the Managing Director of Beton Lučko, Danica Jelenić. It's a serious investment. Danica Jelenić put in 355 000 euros. She is delighted with the result. "Taking part in this project has really strengthened our position. We're taken seriously by other players on the market," she says. The European Eco-Innovation programme gives access to subsidies to launch a project. To this day, it has benefited 200 projects throughout Europe. The noise barrier project was born at Zagreb University. It is the brainchild of professor Stjepan Lakušić. Half of the project was funded by the Eco-Innovation programme, which provided half a million euros. Now, the plan is to sell this innovative technology to neighbouring countries, where there is always a need for fresh ideas on how to recycle tyres. "You need 65 tonnes of recycled tyres to produce a kilometre-long barrier that's one metre high. That's 8,000 old tyres," says RUCONBAR Project Coordinator Stjepan Lakušić. This new technology has already attracted a number of potential buyers seduced by the low production cost. "Using recycled products brings down the cost by ten to eighteen percent compared to similar products on the market," says Stjepan Lakušić. The chairman of Gumiimpex, Damir Kirić, describes his recipe for success: Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Aleppo before the war… and now!

A millennium-old minaret towering above Aleppo's Umayyad mosque, an imposing citadel overlooking the old city center, a medieval covered market and a 21st century shopping mall. Before Syria's ruinous civil war struck Aleppo, the country's largest city was a busy commercial powerhouse and a proud historic center - its long heritage on display in ancient landmarks still used by modern day traders, travelers or worshippers. But the war that erupted across Syria in 2011 exploded into Aleppo in the summer of 2012, when rebel fighters took over the east of the city. What are the top stories today? Epic fail: Amateur ATM robbery goes very wrong, Australia

An Australian robber experienced an epic fail on Tuesday night (May 12), when he tried to steal a service station ATM with only a chain and his car as tools. The amateur thief firstly broke the chain he had attached between the cash distributor and his car, presumably with the intention of wrenching the machine from the wall. He then returned a second time when his parking skills didn’t cut the mustard, as he had parked too far from the entrance to carry out his dastardly plan. What are the top stories today? euronews business planet - Rising to new challenges

03:20
http://www.euronews.com/ This edition of Business Planet takes us to Timisoara, one of Romania's three major economic hubs, a very dynamic region virtually devoid of unemployment. Entrepreneurs in the region are not short of ideas on how to develop their businesses. The Prospero bakery is an example. Founded in 1991, the company has experienced massive growth. It now employs 180 people, and turnover last year reached five million euros. Four years ago, the company invested heavily in a brand new building, state-of-the-art machines and six new delivery lorries. To get the funds needed to develop her business, Adina Bugescu, whose parents founded the bakery, turned to the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Its consultants are members of the Enterprise Europe Network. They worked on a business plan together and Adina secured a European grant worth 750,000 euros. "This helped us increase our productivity and make sure we complied with European standards. Between the time the investment was made and today, turnover has increased by 25 percent and we have hired 60 people," says Adina Bugescu, co-owner of the bakery. For more than 20 years, the Bugescu family's bakery has been making bread that is 100 percent natural, without preservatives or premixes - a choice that apparently appeals to customers. Adina wants to develop the business further. "Today, we have 14 bakeries. The aim is to open up more, to increase productivity and production. And we have another dream: we want to start a baking school," she told us. The Enterprise Europe Network, which has representatives all over Europe and in the rest of the world, helps SMEs like Adina's get European funding and access new markets through seminars and missions. Octavian Culda, the EEN consultant in Timisoara, told euronews: "We take part in three or four missions abroad each year through the European Enterprise Network - throughout the European Union, and in the past two years, in the United States as well." Adina has this advice for anyone seeking to expand their business successfully: "The keys to success are: to clearly identify what you need funding for before seeking it. Then you need to find a consultant who understands the philosophy of your business." Biotechnology to fight air pollution - futuris

04:18
http://www.euronews.com/ Using biotechnology to fight pollution is the challenge for a European Union research project. Under the spotlight - a specific kind of moss. At the University of Freiburg in Germany, a team of biologists is growing moss, in a controlled environment. Mosses are especially well suited as bio-indicators for airborne contaminants as they have no roots and a very high surface-to-mass ratio. Eva Decker, of the university's Faculty of Biology, explained: "We use moss, because, by mass, it has a huge surface area. You can see all the structures and it can clean the dirt particles out of the air. Moss has shoots or spores, and from one of these spores you can grow a new plant. And using these spores we started to cultivate new plants in the laboratory." Monitoring the levels of nitrogen and sulphur oxides, as sell as airborne heavy metals like cadmium, lead and nickel, is hard to achieve with existing technologies as they are either imprecise or very expensive. One innovation is the cultivation of huge amounts of a peat moss under controlled laboratory conditions. Ralf Reski, at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Freiburg told euronews: "We not only reduce the plant's genetic variability to the smallest possible level - one single genetic clone - but also through controlling conditions in the moss bio-reactor we can guarantee that the level of pollution in the moss, as well as its growth, are always identical. And you cannot obtain this consistency with material you have just collected from nature." The moss plants are transferred to air-permeable bags, then moved to monitoring stations at a variety of different European locations where they absorb pollutants from the air. This technique is currently being tested in Santiago di Compostela, Spain. Carlos Brais Carballeira Braña, from the Faculty of Biology, at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain said: "Three different samples are exposed for three weeks in order to accumulate all the pollutants in the area, in this case from passing cars or industrial plant, but primarily it'll be general road traffic" Following that exposure, the moss is dried and powdered, then analysed, to measure the levels of different pollutants in it. This approach, combining molecular biology and material sciences with ecology and bionics, could be, in the future, extended to other critical environmental contexts. José Angel Fernández Escribano at the Faculty of Biology, University of Santiago de Compostela, said the plan is to expand the habitats where this principle is used including rivers, fields and industrial areas. He explained the thinking behind that: "These contaminants can affect rivers, which then flow into the sea, and pollute the marine environment. It will be possible to develop these tools and to discover all the pollutants that are affecting the whole ecosystem."
