Going incognito with VPNs in the age of surveillance | The Listening Post (Feature)

09:58
Virtual Private Networks first came into use in 1996 and are among the most enduring innovations in online browsing with popularity on the rise around the world. VPNs were originally developed as tools for corporations and governments to connect their offices in different countries, to make it easier for people to work together. But as surveillance and control of the web have increased, a market has emerged and expanded - for people to work around internet blocks and to hide their location online. Particularly popular in countries with authoritarian tendencies, such as Iran, China and Turkey, VPNs are now getting downloaded in more countries like Sri Lanka, across the Gulf, as well as the United States, as data theft, online tracking and web blocking grow increasingly common. "During the protests in Sudan, the authorities issued an internet shutdown and a lot of people were using VPNs to circumvent this censorship," Melody Patry, advocacy director for Access Now, tells Al Jazeera. "It really enabled thousands and thousands of people to have access to social media to share pictures, videos to communicate between each other but also with the world about what was going on in the country." Beyond the use of VPNs by activists and journalists keen to spread information outside of a country, the networks also enable users to pursue a diverse array of interests and even to flout the law. "You'll have more ordinary users who just want to watch pornography or sports. And people do that all the time," Joseph Cox, cybersecurity journalist with Vice, points out. "I don't know if it's a legitimate use for VPNs - obviously some will skirt legality - but people use VPNs for all different sorts of reasons." Over the last few years, the number of VPN services has boomed. Nord VPN, Hotspot Shield, ExpressVPN, Tunnel Bear and CyberGhost are just a few of the most popular names on the market. According to Harold Li, vice-president of Express VPN, VPNs used to be challenging to set up but now it is just a matter of downloading an app. He argues privacy and security are not luxuries now, so "VPNs are no more luxury than having a door a lock on your front door". Countries like Indonesia and Turkey rack up some of the highest numbers of software downloads. But the jump in usage of VPNs has not gone unnoticed by authorities. In countries like Belarus, Iran, Oman and Russia for instance, VPNs are subject to heavy restrictions and there are even some laws in place banning them. Yaman Akdeniz, associate professor at the Istanbul Bilgi University, notes that VPN usage in Turkey is not criminalised but recently the country amended its internet law permitting authorities to request access blocking VPN services. "Several of these well-known VPN services are inaccessible from Turkey and if you manage to access their websites and have an account with them, then they don't work," he says. In China, authorities aren't just blocking foreign VPN services, they have also been pushing the use of state-approved and locally-created VPNs that guarantee neither privacy nor anonymity - leaving many people exposed. "When it comes to government and state blocks, that is something that we've been seeing all around the world for the past decade," says Li. "And we expect that will only continue to increase." Hong Kong police draw guns, use water cannon in clashes

Hong Kong police have used water cannon for the first time and at least one officer fired his sidearm during pitched battles with protesters, one of the most violent nights in three months of pro-democracy rallies that have rocked the city. Thousands of protesters on Sunday poured onto the streets of the Tsuen Wan neighbourhood, where they clashed with police, who fired tear gas and eventually turned to two vehicles armed with water cannon to disperse the demonstrators, who gathered despite steady rains. 🇲🇾 Malaysia: Power and Corruption | 101 East

26:01
In 2018, after more than 60 years being ruled by the same party, Malaysians voted out Najib Razak and his government - the catalyst, the disappearance of billions of dollars of public funds involving Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB. Police raids on Najib's family homes after the election seized more than $270m worth of cash and luxury goods including Hermes Birkin handbags worth in excess of $10m and 12,000 pieces of jewellery - valued at more than $100m. For internationally acclaimed Malaysian cartoonist Zunar, none of this came as a surprise. For years, his cartoons portrayed images of government corruption and the extravagance of Najib's wife, Rosmah. Under Najib's government, Zunar faced nine criminal charges for his cartoons, carrying sentences totalling more than 43 years in jail - such was the crackdown on those who dared to speak out. Now a free man, he says that Rosmah had been "the most powerful person in Malaysia" when she was First Lady. A controversial Malaysian businessman, Deepak Jaikishan, who claims to have been Rosmah's confidant and her and Najib's business partner, backs up Zunar. Accusing the couple of benefitting from government deals, he says, "It went to a point where every project had to go through her. Any cabinet minister who defied her or dared to voice out against her was just x-ed off. You could say she's the de facto prime minister." Najib currently faces more than 40 criminal charges, from money laundering to abuse of power, while his wife Rosmah faces 19 charges for money laundering and tax evasion. Both continue to deny all charges. 101 East lifts the curtain on the alleged corruption of the former Prime Minister, Najib Razak, and his wife, Rosmah, and investigates how key institutions were rendered powerless as the nation's coffers were robbed.

Iran will resume high-level enrichment of uranium if world powers do not keep their promises under a 2015 nuclear agreement, President Hassan Rouhani has said. Blackwater's Erik Prince: Iraq, privatising wars, and Trump | Head to Head

49:09
In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Erik Prince, the founder and former CEO of Blackwater, on his security firm’s performance during the Iraq w ar, the “exit strategy” he’s proposing for the w ar in Afghanistan, and his support for US President Donald Trump. During the early years of the Bush administration’s so-called ‘War on Terror’, Blackwater grew into one of the most profitable private military contractors in the US. Over the years, it received over a billion dollars’ worth of government contracts to provide security to top US officials, train members of the Iraqi army and police, and support the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Defense’s counternarcotics programme in Afghanistan. But following the 2007 Nisour Square incident where Blackwater employees shot and killed 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians at a traffic circle, the firm and its founder shot to international notoriety, highlighting the clear dangers of using armed military contractors on the battlefield. Prince, a former US Navy SEAL, has since been channeling his efforts to train security personnel abroad, including most recently in China, where he launched the Hong Kong-based Frontier Services Group, a security and logistics company. He’s also offered a proposal to end the costly, ongoing US-led war in Afghanistan – the longest in US history – by privatising the bulk of it: replacing thousands of US troops with private contractors and sending NATO forces home. But is he really the man to bring peace to the war-torn country? In front of the Oxford Union audience, we challenge Prince on the record of his private contractors in the Iraq w ar and ask him to explain how his controversial plan for the conflict in Afghanistan would bring it to an end. We’ll also ask Prince, who previously served as an informal advisor to President Trump and has been interviewed by both the US House Intelligence Committee and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, about his ties to the current administration. We are joined by a panel of three experts: Sean McFate, a former private military contractor, former officer in the US army, and author of the book, The New Rules of War. Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, an award-winning Guardian journalist from Iraq who’s covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and beyond. Tim Collins, a former commander in the British Army and co-founder of the private military consulting company, New Century. President Hassan Rouhani has apparently suggested that if the United Kingdom releases its tanker seized off the coast of Gibraltar earlier this month, then his country will return a British-flagged vessel it apprehended last week. No end to Qatar blockade after Gulf Cooperation Council talks

Plundering Cambodia's Forests | 101 East

26:01
Cambodia has witnessed some of the most rapid deforestations in the world over the past decade. But a brave local activist is desperately trying to save some of the country's last remaining forests. Leng Ouch has infiltrated logging syndicates across the country and recorded reams of damning evidence using hidden cameras, drones, GPS trackers and informants. His data indicates an environmental apocalypse carried out by powerful syndicates who seem to operate with near-total impunity on a national scale. Leng has repeatedly tracked huge convoys of trucks packed with timber, driving straight out of protected areas and across the border into Vietnam, through a network of easily found illegal crossings. He has presented his evidence to the government but the timber trucks continue to flow out of protected forests right before his eyes. Leng is furious that despite his evidence, the EU has struck a deal with Vietnam that will allow it to certify its own timber exports to Europe. On the other side of the country, in the Cardamom Mountains, conservation group Wildlife Alliance is fighting to protect one of Cambodia's few remaining forests. Its rangers have confiscated thousands of chainsaws and helped prosecute offenders caught logging in the protected zone. But the group fears it is only able to protect a fraction of the country's shrinking forests. 101 East investigates the wholesale destruction of some of the most precious forests left on the Indochina peninsula. #Cambodia #Environment #Forest #Logging More from 101 East on: YouTube - http://aje.io/101eastYouTube Facebook - http://facebook.com/101east Twitter - http://twitter.com/aj101east Instagram - http://instagram.com/aj101east Website - http://aljazeera.com/101east
