The Lady Who Lives With Crocodiles

05:22
Wildlife carer Vicki Lowing is an animal lover, but she takes it further than most. Lowing has been living with crocodiles for thirty years, adopting them from former owners unable to meet their needs. Her beloved “pet” Jilly is thought to be one of the only saltwater crocs in the world raised to interact with humans non-aggressively. Jilly as well as four friendly freshwater crocs are free to roam around Vicki’s suburban Melbourne house, leaving her menagerie of adopted cats, birds, and lizards unscathed. Vicki has dedicated her life to caring for crocodiles, and she stresses that these complex and intelligent creatures shouldn’t be kept as pets by non-specialist owners. Why Indian Truck Drivers Get Their Trucks Painted

09:15
With close to 8.5 million trucks plying on Indian roads, the trucking industry is India’s backbone when it comes to the supply of essential services. Indian trucks are also known for another thing — their fantastical art! For truckers in India, having a kaleidoscope of colours, art, slogans and symbols is almost a rite of passage. The bulky body of the truck becomes a mode of expression, not only for them but also for many truck artists in the country. VICE meets Nafees Ahmad Khan, a truck artist from Indore, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. We also meet truck drivers stationed at Nafees’ workshop to understand why they get their trucks custom painted and what the iconography means for them. The Nepalese Honey That Makes People Hallucinate

Nepal’s Gurung people live mostly in small villages in the vast Annapurna mountain ranges. In this remote region, they practice an ancient tradition of honey hunting where they descend towering cliffs on handmade ladders, to harvest honey nestled under jagged overhangs. In spring, the Gurung’s honey contains a rare substance called grayanotoxin from rhododendron flowers that’s known for its intoxicating effects. While some accounts say it’s a deadly poison, others refer to it as an aphrodisiac, powerful medicine, and a hallucinogenic drug. The Women Who Used Tattoos to Save Themselves From Sexual Slavery (Full Length)

08:37
When the Japanese Imperial Army occupied countries across Southeast Asia during World War II, soldiers kidnapped thousands of young women to serve as “comfort women” or forced sex workers. But on the tiny island of Timor, local women figured out how to use the Japanese forces' apparent respect for married women against them and save themselves from sexual slavery. These women chose to heavily tattoo themselves—thus marking them as “taken” or married according to local beliefs. The plan worked. Japanese soldiers avoided the tattooed women of Malaka, Timor, and the women were able to avoid the dark fate that hundreds of thousands of others were forced into. Many believe that the ritual stopped taking place in the 60s when the New Order regime perpetuated the criminal stereotype for the tattooed. Today, only a few of these “tattooed women” remain alive. VICE host Kathleen Malay travelled to Malaka to hear their stories. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to VICE Asia: https://bit.ly/2LhqAR9

Fungus: The Plastic of the Future

Since its inception, plastic has changed the world as we know it. It's cheap, versatile, and makes up most of the objects we use on a daily basis. Now, scientists and designers are looking to an unlikely source that they hope will eventually replace plastic when it comes some of these everyday material uses- they're looking to fungus. In this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard dives head first into the R+D world surrounding the development of fungi as a viable replacement for plastic, and the people who hope it can lead to a better and more sustainable future. My Car, My Castle: A Homeless Artist and Her Holden

04:50
Jacqui, a talented homeless artist with a long history of abuse and neglect, has lived in her beloved car, Barney, for the past 11 years. As a single, older woman, she is part of Australia’s fastest rising homeless demographic, a group forced to pay the price of a lifetime of gender discrimination. The Geelong resident, whose work featured in a recent exhibition by disadvantaged artists, fled multiple abusive relationships before becoming homeless. She now lives around rural Victoria in her veteran vehicle, finding reprieve in art when she can, and staying on high alert —she has been raped multiple times, like most of the homeless women she knows. “I never know if am going to wake up or not—whether it be from acid or someone with a lighter,” she explains. “I get followed a lot, so am always looking out, but it can be pretty hard to hide an orange Kingswood.” VICE went to visit Jacqui and Barney, to see how she lives and where she draws inspiration for her drawings. “It keeps the depression at bay,” she says. “Art is the only thing keeping me going.” Click here to SUBSCRIBE to VICE Asia: https://bit.ly/2LhqAR9

Psychedelic Psychotherapy: Using LSD, MDMA and Psilocybin to Treat Mental Health

11:44
While psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin, and DMT are most commonly associated with recreational highs and headtrips, a groundswell of academic opinion suggests that the substances could be utilised to serve a raft of therapeutic benefits as well. In Australia, official trials of medicinal psychedelics are only just starting to get off the ground. But a small community of experimental psychotherapists—along with self-medicating users—have been using acid and mushrooms to treat mental health conditions for years, with promising results. We speak to some of the people who are at the coalface of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in Australia—and hear their views on how mind-expanding drugs could be the next frontier in mental health treatment. Please note that since this video was made, a medical trial using psilocybin for palliative care patients will be introduced in Melbourne, Australia. 21:39
Thousands of people in the Philippines are living in slums inside public cemetaries. Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines has been site of rapid economic growth of the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strictly controlled rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nations capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. However, many of these people remained both on the margins of society, and Manila itself. As the population boomed, slums began cropping up. There's one such slum within Navotas Cemetery where 6,000 men, women, and children currently live amongst the graves and dug up human bones. A Bharatanatyam Dancer Challenging Racial Stereotypes: Charles Ma

04:59
Part-Nepalese, part-Chinese, along with Northeastern roots, Charles Ma grew up in a Tamil community in Bengaluru. Mystified by Bharatanatyam, he decided to dedicate his life to Nataraj. However, the journey wasn’t easy for him. His physical features were not in alignment with what is generally accepted in the realm of classical dance — beautiful women with lustrous hair, big almond eyes lined with kohl, adorning temple jewellery. And that led to incidents of racial discrimination, when he was categorically told that he not the right fit in the world of classical dance. Charles broke the mould and chipped away at the stereotype, to become one of the few male Bharatanatyam dancers in India. In this episode of VICE Meets, Charles talks to us about what it means to be a classical dancer with distinctive facial features in a society that remains rooted in racism and discrimination.
