President Yoweri Museveni Monday assented into law the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill saying recruiters, mercenaries and exhibitors of homosexuality will not be tolerated and will be harshly punished. The President's move comes amid international pressure not to do so. US President Barack Obama had previously warned that signing the bill into law would have dire consequences on the relationship between the two countries while Canada had threatened to expel Ugandan diplomats. "We are not gays," President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe told the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Monday. "We reject attempts to prescribe new rights that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions and beliefs," he said. The comment drew gasps and laughter from the delegates. However, Mugabe - who led the militant Zimbabwe Afircan National Union against white minority rule in Rhodesia the 1960s and 1970s - also drew applause from the audience after he reiterated his nation's "unwavering" support towards the Palestinian people as well as his condemnation of "destabilisation" policies from outside powers in the Middle East. Discussing the ongoing tragedy in the Mediterranean, the "tragic situation could have been avoided through the respect of the independence of other countries and non-interference in internal affairs," the 91-year-old Zimbabwean leader added. Nigeria's president has signed a new bill into law that bans gay marriage, gay rights advocacy and public displays of affection between same-sex couples. Homosexual acts were already illegal in Nigeria. Human rights activists say the new law reflects a larger trend to ramp up anti-gay legislation and penalties. VOA's Anne Look has more.

President Paul Kagame has assured the Rwandan Diaspora and friends that Rwanda is a peaceful country where everyone is supportive of each other. The Rwandan head of state was speaking at Rwanda Cultural Day convened in San Francisco, California. Commended for championing gender equality, the president was inquired about the possibility of living in Rwanda as LGBT (Lesibian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). For President Kagame who first took a minute-long pause, said,” it hasn’t been our problem. And we don’t intend to make it our problem.” According to Article 26 of Rwanda’s constitution, “Only civil monogamous marriage between a man and a woman is recognized. No person may be married without his or her free consent. Parties to a marriage have equal rights and duties upon and during the subsistence of a marriage and at the time of divorce. The law determines conditions, forms and effect of marriage.” However, sexual orientation is a private matter, not a state business. Rwanda is considered a leader in the progress on human rights for LGBT persons in East Africa. In 2010 Rwanda eliminated the criminalisation provision from its draft code and recently signed two UN resolutions on sexual orientation and gender identity, as the only African nation to do so. Wide of news conference 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of United States: "No, I'm not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29 year old hacker." 12. Cutaway of media STORYLINE: President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the US Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage as a "victory for American democracy" but clashed with his African host over gay rights in a sign of how far the movement has to go internationally. Obama said recognition of gay unions in the United States should cross state lines and that equal rights should be recognised universally. It was his first chance to expand on his thoughts about the ruling, which was issued Wednesday as he flew to Senegal, one of many African countries that outlaw homosexuality. Senegalese President Macky Sall rebuffed Obama's call for Africans to give gays equal rights under the law. Obama said gay rights didn't come up in their private meeting at the presidential palace, a mansion that looks somewhat similar to the White House. But Obama said he wants to send a message to Africans that while he respects differing personal and religious views on the matter, it's important to have nondiscrimination under the law. "I believe at the root of who we are as a people, as Americans, is the basic precept that we are all equal under the law," he said. A report released Monday by Amnesty International says 38 African countries criminalise homosexuality. Obama also offered prayers for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is gravely ill, ahead of Obama's planned visit to his country this weekend. Obama said he was inspired to become politically active by Mandela's example in the anti-apartheid movement of being willing to sacrifice his life for a belief in equal treatment. "If and when he (Nelson Mandela) passes from this place, one thing I think we all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages," Obama said. Obama also sought to downplay the international chase for the man he called "a 29-year-old hacker" and lower the temperature of an issue that has raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China. Obama said that the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again. Edward Snowden, who is charged with violating American espionage laws, fled Hong Kong over the weekend and flew to Russia. Obama's focus in Senegal is on the modern-day achievements of the former French colony after half a century of independence. President Robert Mugabe still rules Zimbabwe at age 92, making him the world's oldest sitting president. His party, the Zanu-PF, is in strife over who will come after him. The state media's dilemma is how to report the succession battles when talking about Mugabe's succession is an editorial red line. State-owned news outlets, like The Herald newspaper and the Zimbabwean Broadcasting Corporation remain loyal to Mugabe but even they are backing one faction in the Zanu-PF - albeit indirectly - by attacking the other. Mugabe's message is clear: the media has no place in Zimbabwe's political future. But with ripples from last year's anti-government protests still in the air and instability at an all-time high, the silenced social media campaigns and wary journalists make for a concerning overview of the coverage surrounding Mugabe's succession. There has long been suspicion of a government cover-up of information about the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0918487633/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0918487633&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=f6ceecbd6adc5ea662cee1edd6560aa8 Numerous conspiracy theories regarding the assassination arose soon after Kennedy's death and continue to this day. Most put forth a criminal conspiracy involving parties as varied as the CIA, the KGB, the American Mafia, the Israeli government, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, sitting Vice President Lyndon Johnson, Cuban president Fidel Castro, anti-Castro Cuban exile groups, the Federal Reserve, or some combination of those entities. In 1979, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Kennedy's assassination was likely the result of a conspiracy. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he traveled in an open-top car in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 PM,CST (1:30 PM EST) November 22, 1963; Texas Governor John Connally was also injured. Within two hours, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder of Dallas policeman J.D. Tippit and arraigned that evening. At 1:35 AM Saturday, Oswald was arraigned for murdering the President. At 11:21 AM, Sunday, November 24, 1963, nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald as he was being transferred to the county jail. Immediately after the shooting, little information was available and many people suspected that the assassination was part of a larger plot. Ruby's shooting of Oswald compounded initial suspicions. Mark Lane has been described as writing "the first literary shot" among conspiracy theorists with his article in the December 19, 1963 edition of the National Guardian, "Defense Brief for Oswald". Published in May 1964, Thomas Buchanan's Who Killed Kennedy? has been credited as the first book alleging a conspiracy. In 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone and that no credible evidence supported the contention that he was involved in a conspiracy to assassinate the president. The Commission also indicated that Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State; Robert S. McNamara, the Secretary of Defense; C. Douglas Dillon, the Secretary of the Treasury; Robert F. Kennedy, the Attorney General; J. Edgar Hoover, the Director of the FBI; John A. McCone, the Director of the CIA; and James J. Rowley, the Chief of the Secret Service, each independently reached the same conclusion on the basis of information available to them. In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) agreed with the Warren Commission that Oswald assassinated Kennedy, but concluded that the Commission's report and the original FBI investigation were both seriously flawed. The HSCA also concluded that at least four shots were fired with a "high probability" that two gunmen fired at the President, and that a conspiracy was probable. The HSCA also stated that "the Warren Commission failed to investigate adequately the possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate the president." The Ramsey Clark Panel and the Rockefeller Commission both supported the Warren Commission's conclusions, while New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison unsuccessfully prosecuted Clay Shaw for conspiring to assassinate Kennedy. According to John McAdams: "The greatest and grandest of all conspiracy theories is the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory." Others have frequently referred to it as "the mother of all conspiracies". The number of books written about the assassination of Kennedy has been estimated to be in the range of one thousand to two thousand. According to Vincent Bugliosi, 95% of those books are "pro-conspiracy and anti-Warren Commission". Kennedy assassination enthusiasts have been described as belonging to "conspiracy theorists" on one side and "debunkers" on the other. The great amount of controversy surrounding the event has led to bitter disputes between those who support the conclusion of the Warren Commission and those who reject it or are critical of the official explanation, with each side leveling accusations of "naivete, cynicism, and selective interpretation of the evidence" toward the other. Public opinion polls taken after the assassination have indicated that a large number of Americans believe there was a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy. These same polls also show that there is no agreement on who else may have been involved. A 2003 Gallup poll reported that 75% of Americans do not believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. That same year an ABC News poll found that 70% of respondents suspected that the assassination involved more than one person. A 2004 Fox News poll found that 66% of Americans thought there had been a conspiracy while 74% thought there had been a cover-up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFK_conspiracy_theories

Pope Francis Gives His Blessing for Tattoos There is nothing wrong with tattoos, Pope Francis told a group of young people Monday, urging them to be open to cultural expressions of “belonging.” Asked about tattoos and other expressions of modern culture by a seminarian from Ukraine, the pope said that the problem is that some people exaggerate by covering their body with tattoos, but “the problem is the exaggeration, not the tattoos.” Yulian Vendzilovych, a seminarian at Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv, told the pope that some people sport tattoos to express beauty, and others as a cultural symbol, but it is not easy for a young priest to judge which parts of modern culture are good and which are not. “Don’t be afraid of tattoos,” the pope responded, noting that for many years Eritrean Christians and others have gotten tattoos of the cross on their foreheads. “Of course, there can be exaggerations,” the pope said, remarking that people who get too many tattoos cannot give blood because of a “danger of blood poisoning.” A tattoo “is a sign of belonging,” Francis said, and offers an opportunity to strike up a conversation with young people about what matters to them “and then you can enter into the culture of the young.” “But do not panic,” he said. “With young people you should never be frightened, never! Because always, even behind the not-so-good things, there is something that will get us to some truth.” Pope Francis has often weighed in on issues affecting young people and modern culture, insisting that the Church be open to where people are. Last March, however, the pope warned youth to beware of the falsehoods behind much of social media and “reality shows,” urging them to live their own lives and to create their own histories. The pope’s Message for World Youth Day 2017 contained a lengthy commentary on the hi-tech world in which young people are immersed, comparing the memories of their personal experiences with the computer hardware that stores large quantities of data. “Yet our memories should not remain crammed together, like the memory of a hard drive,” Francis said. “Nor can we archive everything in some sort of virtual ‘cloud.’ We need to learn how to make past events a dynamic reality on which to reflect and to draw lessons and meaning for the present and the future.” He was quite critical of attachments to social media and so-called reality shows, warning youth that virtual friendships and virtual reality often conceal many falsehoods and are no substitute for real interpersonal experiences. “In the social media, we see faces of young people appearing in any number of pictures recounting more or less real events, but we don’t know how much of all this is really ‘history,’ an experience that can be communicated and endowed with purpose and meaning,” Francis said. The pope has made extensive us of social media during his five-year pontificate, and a 2015 study proclaimed him to be the most influential person on Twitter for the third year in a row. Yet in spite of his own success with social media, he remains skeptical of its real influence. “Television is full of ‘reality shows’ which are not real stories, but only moments passed before a television camera by characters living from day to day, without a greater plan,” he said in his message to the young. “Don’t let yourselves be led astray by this false image of reality! Be the protagonists of your history; decide your own future.”

Mumbai came out in large numbers for the Gay Pride March 2016 at August Kranti Maidan, Grant Road today. It was fun, quirky and passionate rally. Some came out openly, others not so even as an impatient Mumbai was eager to get a move on. However, the noise was loud and clear as everyone screamed in unison: SAY NO TO SECTION 377. Thousands of people marched in Mumbai’s 8th Annual LGBT Pride Parade on February 6, 2016. Estimates of participants range from 5,000 to 10,000 with people from all walks of life: gay, lesbian, transgender, asexual, queer, and even people with heterosexual orientation who support LGBT rights. The gay pride parade which is known as Queer Azaadi Mumbai, began with an assembly at August Kranti Maidan at 3 pm. At 4 pm it moved to Opera House and Kennedy Bridge before turning back to the Maidan. It was also attended by celebrities and film personalities with the entire cast of the Bollywood film ‘Aligarh’ which will soon release and is based on the true story of the death of a gay professor who was kicked out of the Aligarh Muslim University. It’s director Hansal Mehta and lead actors Manoj Bajpai and Rajkumar Rao were also present. India has a chequered history of LGBT rights. The Indian Supreme Court on December 11, 2013, overturned a 2009 Delhi High Court judgement decriminalising same-sex intercourse, thus re-instituting the legal penalty applicable under Section 377. But just a few days before the march, on February 2, 2016, during a hearing of the curative petition submitted by the Naz Foundation and others against the 2013 verdict, the Supreme court decided to submit the matter to a five-judge bench for consideration. This brought a ray of hope to the LGBT community which continues to suffer because of regressive laws in the country which has not kept itself in tune with the rest of the world. FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 2044851 Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) residents of India's most populous city, along with their supporters, carried rainbow coloured flags, symbolising gay pride, and danced as they marched through the city. Gay Pride Parade organiser, Ankit Bhuptani, said the event was a positive step for India's conservative society, where being gay remains taboo. Early this month, India's Supreme Court reversed a lower court order that had decriminalised gay sex. The top court said a High Court decision in 2009 to strike down the law was unconstitutional, as it was for lawmakers - and not courts - to decide on the matter. Same-sex sexual relations in the country are punishable by up to ten years in prison. LGBT activists who have fought for years for the chance to live openly in a conservative society say the decision infringes their human rights. India's LBGT community and their supporters showed up in record numbers to march in Mumbai's 7th annual gay pride parade. Many were there to protest the January Supreme Court decision to uphold India's controversial ban on gay sex. Enacted in 1860, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalizes any sex that is not penile-vaginal. Offenders are looking at 10 years to life if convicted, a harsher penalty than rapists face in India. "We just want the courts and the society to let us be the way we are," says Shane Lonen, a fashion stylist from Mumbai, who sported huge feathered wings as part of his costume. "We are born this way. You can't make us criminal." The Delhi High Court agreed in 2009 and decriminalized gay sex between consenting adults. The landmark decision was a huge victory for gay activism in India and gave many gay people the courage to come out and reveal their sexuality. But in December of last year, the Supreme Court overturned that decision. Just one week ago, it refused to review the petition again. "The recent Supreme Court judgments have lead many into insecurity again," says gay activist Ankit Bhuptani. "You fear that revealing yourself as gay would cause people to beat you up, because you are a criminal once again." Many struggle to hide their sexuality from family and coworkers, going as far as to agree to arranged marriages with members of the opposite sex. Identical twin brothers Yogi and Nish Muley were lucky; their father accepted their homosexuality. Now they counsel families in Mumbai. "We try to talk with the parents and tell them that homosexuality is not a mental problem or a disease. The more pressure a person faces to hide their sexuality, the more they are driven to commit suicide. Would you rather have a gay child than a dead one?" It is known as Mumbai's Queer Azaadi March. Azaadi is Hindi for "freedom." It was a march for freedom, and Vocativ was there.

In Juchitán, Mexico, muxes – children identified as male at birth, but who choose at a young age to be raised as female – are embraced as part of the community. Being muxe is often confused with being transgender, but it is an identity specific to the Oaxaca region and the indigenous Zapoteca culture. Having a muxe person in the family has come to be seen as good luck and even a blessing. But life outside Juchitán is not always easy.
