President Yoweri Museveni Monday assented into law the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill saying recruiters, mercenaries and exhibitors of homosexuality will not be tolerated and will be harshly punished. The President's move comes amid international pressure not to do so. US President Barack Obama had previously warned that signing the bill into law would have dire consequences on the relationship between the two countries while Canada had threatened to expel Ugandan diplomats. "We are not gays," President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe told the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Monday. "We reject attempts to prescribe new rights that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions and beliefs," he said. The comment drew gasps and laughter from the delegates. However, Mugabe - who led the militant Zimbabwe Afircan National Union against white minority rule in Rhodesia the 1960s and 1970s - also drew applause from the audience after he reiterated his nation's "unwavering" support towards the Palestinian people as well as his condemnation of "destabilisation" policies from outside powers in the Middle East. Discussing the ongoing tragedy in the Mediterranean, the "tragic situation could have been avoided through the respect of the independence of other countries and non-interference in internal affairs," the 91-year-old Zimbabwean leader added. We believe in basic fairness and what I think yesterday's ruling signifies is one more step towards ensuring that those basic principles apply to everybody." 6. Media cutaway 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of United States: "And I'm not going to have one case of a suspect who we are trying to extradite suddenly being elevated to the point where I have got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues simply to get a guy extradited so that he can face the justice system here in the United States." 10. Wide of news conference 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Barack Obama, President of United States: "No, I'm not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29 year old hacker." 12. Cutaway of media STORYLINE: President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the US Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage as a "victory for American democracy" but clashed with his African host over gay rights in a sign of how far the movement has to go internationally. Obama said recognition of gay unions in the United States should cross state lines and that equal rights should be recognised universally. It was his first chance to expand on his thoughts about the ruling, which was issued Wednesday as he flew to Senegal, one of many African countries that outlaw homosexuality. Senegalese President Macky Sall rebuffed Obama's call for Africans to give gays equal rights under the law. Obama said gay rights didn't come up in their private meeting at the presidential palace, a mansion that looks somewhat similar to the White House. But Obama said he wants to send a message to Africans that while he respects differing personal and religious views on the matter, it's important to have nondiscrimination under the law. "I believe at the root of who we are as a people, as Americans, is the basic precept that we are all equal under the law," he said. A report released Monday by Amnesty International says 38 African countries criminalise homosexuality. Obama also offered prayers for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is gravely ill, ahead of Obama's planned visit to his country this weekend. Obama said he was inspired to become politically active by Mandela's example in the anti-apartheid movement of being willing to sacrifice his life for a belief in equal treatment. "If and when he (Nelson Mandela) passes from this place, one thing I think we all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages," Obama said. Obama also sought to downplay the international chase for the man he called "a 29-year-old hacker" and lower the temperature of an issue that has raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China. Obama said that the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again. Edward Snowden, who is charged with violating American espionage laws, fled Hong Kong over the weekend and flew to Russia. Obama's focus in Senegal is on the modern-day achievements of the former French colony after half a century of independence. English/Nat Gay rights activists have abandoned their booth at Africa's biggest book fair after it was besieged by protesters trying to prevent the display of gay-rights pamphlets. Around 100 protesters kept the activists from showing the pamphlets despite a court ruling in favour of the group. But, despite threats of intimidation, the activists said they would try to reoccupy the booth until the fair closes. The Zimbabwe International Book Fair, held in the grounds of a state art gallery, is the setting of the latest confrontation between Zimbabwe's government and the gay community it's trying to suppress. Attorney General Patrick Chinamasa had earlier filed a suit before the Supreme Court appealing a judge's ruling that overturned a government ban on the exhibit by the Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe. But this appeal was overturned by the Supreme Court on Friday. At the opening of the fair there was an appeal for tolerance. SOUNDBITE: "I ask that due consideration in the future should be given to the fact that ZIBF mainly is an international trade fair, and that for authors and publishers from many different countries freedom of expression is a fundamental human right which always must be secured." SUPER CAPTION: John-Willy Rudolph But some delegates openly expressed hostility to the gays. SOUNDBITE: "What I feel is that if they will come to the book fair I shall personally mobilise people to give the treatment which has always been traditionally given to what we call (intelligible) gays, because it's not acceptable. I would set them alight." SUPER CAPTION: Cyrus One, Zimbabwean Film Maker The state argued a ban on the gay exhibit should be upheld by the Supreme Court under Censorship and Entertainment Control laws prohibiting what are deemed to be immoral displays in literature, movies and the theatre. Zimbabwe's only gay group, which has about 150 members, should now be allowed to occupy the booth and exhibit their material -- after the government appeal was overturned. But, earlier, the group had to stand in an empty booth. Keith Goddard, head of the gay group, arrived at the fair with fellow activists, registered as an exhibitor and stood in the empty booth, answering visitors' questions, some of them hostile. He said the group's mere presence was a symbolic victory. SOUNDBITE: "Last year we were not allowed to exhibit at all and the fact that here today we are actually standing in a stand which may not have galz or anything written on it but we are actually a presence, to us is a victory, and the first victory may be very small but when it comes to a revolution - civil or otherwise - these are always the biggest steps." SUPER CAPTION: Keith Goddard, Organiser for Galz Some 700 publishers, booksellers, librarians and authors from 42 countries are attending the fair and it's reputation has been hurt by what is becoming an annual debate on censorship and civil rights. President Robert Mugabe forced a similar gay exhibit out of last year's fair, and described homosexuals as "lower than dogs and pigs." The gay exhibit's organisers say they intend only to show legal and religious documents on gay rights "to correct some distorted images of homosexuality in this country". They say there is a small but active gay community in Zimbabwe, despite homosexuality being illegal. SOUNDBITE: SUPER CAPTION: Gerald Chipwanya, Gay The fair's organisers say the controversy has overshadowed the true nature of the event. SOUNDBITE: "I think the most disappointing thing for us trustees is that the attention is taken away by one small incident which obviously is a significant incident but it does play down all the others." "Archbishop Stanley Ntagali of the Anglican Church of Uganda called last month's Supreme Court’s decision on marriage an "immoral virus." The president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, called American leaders "perverted Satan-worshipers." Kenya’s deputy president, William Ruto, reportedly promised to defend his country from "dirty things." These comments -- all delivered in the wake of the court’s landmark ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States -- illustrate a dynamic that has been worrying the international LGBT community for years now: As American evangelicals lose traction at home, they are increasingly finding receptive audiences abroad. Advocates on both sides of the aisle predict the Supreme Court’s ruling will bolster evangelicals' efforts against LGBT rights overseas. 'If you live in the United States, it’s easy to be lulled into thinking that the battle for broader civil rights for gay people is nearly over' Rev. Grace Mugabe, the wife of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who has already been sued in South Africa for assault, is facing a new complaint in her country filed by a former employee who accuses her of having beaten her. The case dates back to March 2017, a few months before the end of the reign of the Mugabe nonagenarian in Zimbabwe. In a statement filed in a court in the capital Harare, Shupikai Chiroodza, who worked for the presidential couple in their private residence, claims to … READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2019/05/15/zimbabwean-former-first-lady-grace-mugabe-accused-of-assaulting-domestic-worker Africanews on YouTube brings you a daily dose of news, produced and realised in Africa, by and for Africans. President Robert Mugabe still rules Zimbabwe at age 92, making him the world's oldest sitting president. His party, the Zanu-PF, is in strife over who will come after him. The state media's dilemma is how to report the succession battles when talking about Mugabe's succession is an editorial red line. State-owned news outlets, like The Herald newspaper and the Zimbabwean Broadcasting Corporation remain loyal to Mugabe but even they are backing one faction in the Zanu-PF - albeit indirectly - by attacking the other. Mugabe's message is clear: the media has no place in Zimbabwe's political future. But with ripples from last year's anti-government protests still in the air and instability at an all-time high, the silenced social media campaigns and wary journalists make for a concerning overview of the coverage surrounding Mugabe's succession. A growing number of Asian artists have burst onto the hip-hop scene over the past few years, thanks, in large part, to 88rising—a multimedia company that specializes in signing and amplifying Asian talent. Founder Sean Miyashiro has helped artists like Joji, Higher Brothers, and Rich Brian (formerly known as Rich Chigga) build massive followings and net millions of views on YouTube, where the rappers upload a steady stream of music videos. But even as their popularity skyrockets, some in the hip-hop community take issue with their lyrics—raising questions about the line between self-expression and cultural appropriation. For this episode of ‘MINORITY REPORTS,’ VICE’s Lee Adams met up with Miyashiro and a handful of high-profile Asian rappers—including $tupid Young, an Asian Crip unaffiliated with 88rising—to hear why they got into hip-hop, and what challenges they've faced while creating space for themselves as hip-hop's newest minorities. He also sat down with Ebro Darden—a Hot 97 morning host and Apple Music’s global editorial head of hip-hop and R&B—to hear his take on the cultural movement, exploring what separates contributing to hip-hop culture from misappropriating it. There has long been suspicion of a government cover-up of information about the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0918487633/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0918487633&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=f6ceecbd6adc5ea662cee1edd6560aa8 Numerous conspiracy theories regarding the assassination arose soon after Kennedy's death and continue to this day. Most put forth a criminal conspiracy involving parties as varied as the CIA, the KGB, the American Mafia, the Israeli government, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, sitting Vice President Lyndon Johnson, Cuban president Fidel Castro, anti-Castro Cuban exile groups, the Federal Reserve, or some combination of those entities. In 1979, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Kennedy's assassination was likely the result of a conspiracy. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he traveled in an open-top car in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 PM,CST (1:30 PM EST) November 22, 1963; Texas Governor John Connally was also injured. Within two hours, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder of Dallas policeman J.D. Tippit and arraigned that evening. At 1:35 AM Saturday, Oswald was arraigned for murdering the President. At 11:21 AM, Sunday, November 24, 1963, nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald as he was being transferred to the county jail. Immediately after the shooting, little information was available and many people suspected that the assassination was part of a larger plot. Ruby's shooting of Oswald compounded initial suspicions. Mark Lane has been described as writing "the first literary shot" among conspiracy theorists with his article in the December 19, 1963 edition of the National Guardian, "Defense Brief for Oswald". Published in May 1964, Thomas Buchanan's Who Killed Kennedy? has been credited as the first book alleging a conspiracy. In 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone and that no credible evidence supported the contention that he was involved in a conspiracy to assassinate the president. The Commission also indicated that Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State; Robert S. McNamara, the Secretary of Defense; C. Douglas Dillon, the Secretary of the Treasury; Robert F. Kennedy, the Attorney General; J. Edgar Hoover, the Director of the FBI; John A. McCone, the Director of the CIA; and James J. Rowley, the Chief of the Secret Service, each independently reached the same conclusion on the basis of information available to them. In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) agreed with the Warren Commission that Oswald assassinated Kennedy, but concluded that the Commission's report and the original FBI investigation were both seriously flawed. The HSCA also concluded that at least four shots were fired with a "high probability" that two gunmen fired at the President, and that a conspiracy was probable. The HSCA also stated that "the Warren Commission failed to investigate adequately the possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate the president." The Ramsey Clark Panel and the Rockefeller Commission both supported the Warren Commission's conclusions, while New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison unsuccessfully prosecuted Clay Shaw for conspiring to assassinate Kennedy. According to John McAdams: "The greatest and grandest of all conspiracy theories is the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory." Others have frequently referred to it as "the mother of all conspiracies". The number of books written about the assassination of Kennedy has been estimated to be in the range of one thousand to two thousand. According to Vincent Bugliosi, 95% of those books are "pro-conspiracy and anti-Warren Commission". Kennedy assassination enthusiasts have been described as belonging to "conspiracy theorists" on one side and "debunkers" on the other. The great amount of controversy surrounding the event has led to bitter disputes between those who support the conclusion of the Warren Commission and those who reject it or are critical of the official explanation, with each side leveling accusations of "naivete, cynicism, and selective interpretation of the evidence" toward the other. Public opinion polls taken after the assassination have indicated that a large number of Americans believe there was a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy. These same polls also show that there is no agreement on who else may have been involved. A 2003 Gallup poll reported that 75% of Americans do not believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Claire Birkenshaw was the first principal of a UK school to transition from man to woman. She was amazed at the students' reactions and their support - but not everyone was. In this talk, she tells her story of how she came to her decision, the things people said, and how she didn't really change - she was always Claire, on the inside. Now she's happily Claire on the outside and she advocates for young people who are questioning their gender, their sexuality and need support to be their authentic selves. Mumbai came out in large numbers for the Gay Pride March 2016 at August Kranti Maidan, Grant Road today. It was fun, quirky and passionate rally. Some came out openly, others not so even as an impatient Mumbai was eager to get a move on. However, the noise was loud and clear as everyone screamed in unison: SAY NO TO SECTION 377. Thousands of people marched in Mumbai’s 8th Annual LGBT Pride Parade on February 6, 2016. Estimates of participants range from 5,000 to 10,000 with people from all walks of life: gay, lesbian, transgender, asexual, queer, and even people with heterosexual orientation who support LGBT rights. The gay pride parade which is known as Queer Azaadi Mumbai, began with an assembly at August Kranti Maidan at 3 pm. At 4 pm it moved to Opera House and Kennedy Bridge before turning back to the Maidan. It was also attended by celebrities and film personalities with the entire cast of the Bollywood film ‘Aligarh’ which will soon release and is based on the true story of the death of a gay professor who was kicked out of the Aligarh Muslim University. It’s director Hansal Mehta and lead actors Manoj Bajpai and Rajkumar Rao were also present. India has a chequered history of LGBT rights. The Indian Supreme Court on December 11, 2013, overturned a 2009 Delhi High Court judgement decriminalising same-sex intercourse, thus re-instituting the legal penalty applicable under Section 377. But just a few days before the march, on February 2, 2016, during a hearing of the curative petition submitted by the Naz Foundation and others against the 2013 verdict, the Supreme court decided to submit the matter to a five-judge bench for consideration. This brought a ray of hope to the LGBT community which continues to suffer because of regressive laws in the country which has not kept itself in tune with the rest of the world. India's LBGT community and their supporters showed up in record numbers to march in Mumbai's 7th annual gay pride parade. Many were there to protest the January Supreme Court decision to uphold India's controversial ban on gay sex. Enacted in 1860, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalizes any sex that is not penile-vaginal. Offenders are looking at 10 years to life if convicted, a harsher penalty than rapists face in India. "We just want the courts and the society to let us be the way we are," says Shane Lonen, a fashion stylist from Mumbai, who sported huge feathered wings as part of his costume. "We are born this way. You can't make us criminal." The Delhi High Court agreed in 2009 and decriminalized gay sex between consenting adults. The landmark decision was a huge victory for gay activism in India and gave many gay people the courage to come out and reveal their sexuality. But in December of last year, the Supreme Court overturned that decision. Just one week ago, it refused to review the petition again. "The recent Supreme Court judgments have lead many into insecurity again," says gay activist Ankit Bhuptani. "You fear that revealing yourself as gay would cause people to beat you up, because you are a criminal once again." Many struggle to hide their sexuality from family and coworkers, going as far as to agree to arranged marriages with members of the opposite sex. Identical twin brothers Yogi and Nish Muley were lucky; their father accepted their homosexuality. Now they counsel families in Mumbai. "We try to talk with the parents and tell them that homosexuality is not a mental problem or a disease. The more pressure a person faces to hide their sexuality, the more they are driven to commit suicide. Would you rather have a gay child than a dead one?" It is known as Mumbai's Queer Azaadi March. Azaadi is Hindi for "freedom." It was a march for freedom, and Vocativ was there. FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 2044851 Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) residents of India's most populous city, along with their supporters, carried rainbow coloured flags, symbolising gay pride, and danced as they marched through the city. Gay Pride Parade organiser, Ankit Bhuptani, said the event was a positive step for India's conservative society, where being gay remains taboo. Early this month, India's Supreme Court reversed a lower court order that had decriminalised gay sex. The top court said a High Court decision in 2009 to strike down the law was unconstitutional, as it was for lawmakers - and not courts - to decide on the matter. Same-sex sexual relations in the country are punishable by up to ten years in prison. LGBT activists who have fought for years for the chance to live openly in a conservative society say the decision infringes their human rights.

In Juchitán, Mexico, muxes – children identified as male at birth, but who choose at a young age to be raised as female – are embraced as part of the community. Being muxe is often confused with being transgender, but it is an identity specific to the Oaxaca region and the indigenous Zapoteca culture. Having a muxe person in the family has come to be seen as good luck and even a blessing. But life outside Juchitán is not always easy.
